PC programs

Over time I have published many lists of programs on my blog, lists through which I have tried to recommend the best applications for working, downloading files from the Internet, communicating with friends and – more generally – making full use of the potential of your computer .

Many friends, however, have pointed out to me that finding them all is not easy, it takes too long. So here I am with a nice summary post that lists all the must-have PC programs, both free and paid.

Taking a cue from some of the most interesting lists I published in the past, we will therefore see which are the best software to surf the Internet, chat, protect the computer, manage multimedia files and do much more on Windows systems. Let’s start now!

Taking a cue from some of the most interesting lists I published in the past, we will therefore see which are the best software to surf the Internet, chat, protect the computer, manage multimedia files and do much more on Windows systems. Let’s start now!

Internet programs

Let’s start this collection of PC programs from software dedicated to the big network, such as browsers, clients to manage e-mail, messaging applications and programs to download files from the Internet at maximum speed.

Browser

If you are looking for a good browser with which to replace Internet Explorer, I strongly recommend you to focus on Chrome, Google’s browser that is extremely fast in loading pages, has free extensions to increase its functions and synchronize all your browsing data online to different computers, devices and operating systems.

Alternatively I would opt for Mozilla Firefox which has a very lively community and the “transparency” typical of open source software. Even this browser is very fast, it can synchronize the navigation data via the Internet and has an unmatched extension park with add-ons that are definitely more powerful and flexible than those available for any other browser.

You can find links to download both programs and other tips on interesting browsers to try on my list of Internet surfing programs.

Email

Many users have abandoned the classic e-mail clients in favor of services, such as Gmail, Outlook and Virgilio Mail that allow you to manage your correspondence directly from the browser. If you are not among these and you are looking for a good e-mail application entrusted to Mozilla Thunderbird that, just like Firefox, is free, open source and fully customizable thanks to the availability of numerous extensions. Find the link to download it and other tips on email programs in my post on the subject.

Communication

Although messaging has moved almost entirely to mobile thanks to services like WhatsApp and Facebook, there are still great solutions for chatting and communicating with friends from PC. One of the most interesting is Pidgin, a free and open source IM software that allows you to communicate on all major messaging networks, such as Facebook, Google Hangouts, IRC etc.

Then I wouldn’t miss Skype, the hugely popular VoIP client that is now owned by Microsoft and went on to replace the old Messenger. Of course, it does not only allow you to communicate verbatim but also (and above all) to make free calls and video calls.

The download links and other tips on the best chat programs can be found in my post dedicated to the topic.

Download files from the Internet

When it comes to programs to download files from the Internet it is practically impossible not to mention uTorrent, the best BitTorrent network client, which is very easy to use and always guarantees fast downloads.

Together with it I suggest you also install JDownloader which is a 360  download manager capable of downloading files from any website, capturing photos, videos and links from the browser and perfectly managing the premium accounts of hosting services.

I told you extensively about both software in my post on the best programs to download files from the Internet, while if you are specifically interested in programs to download music and programs to download movies, take a look at the related articles.

Work Programs

Now let’s move on to PC programs for work, that is all those software that allow you to process texts, spreadsheets, make presentations, view and edit PDFs and print documents.

Office suite

Microsoft Office is a very common but very expensive software package. If you do not intend to buy it, however, you can contact LibreOffice which is a completely free suite thanks to which you can create text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, databases and other documents that can be printed in a very simple way. It supports all Microsoft Office files (both incoming and outgoing) and is also capable of editing PDF documents.

Remaining on the subject of PDF, I suggest you also install Sumatra PDF or Nitro Reader. The first is a simple reader of PDF documents known for its lightness and essentiality, the second one is a much more complete software that allows not only to read PDFs but also to modify and create them starting from Office documents and digital images.

The posts you can refer to to download them are: office programs and PDF programs.

Print

With Microsoft Publisher (included in the Microsoft Office package) and Impress (included in LibreOffice) you can create many types of printable documents, such as brochures, flyers and greeting cards but there are also more specific applications to create posters, print brochures, make tickets greeting cards and business cards. Find out which ones are the best by visiting the posts I’ve just linked to.
